Best basketball you never knew was here

My first interaction with Fork Union Military Academy post graduate basketball was when my dad took me to see a game. He told me, "Son, you'll see some of the best basketball you never knew was right here." He's description of the basketball was right then and is still right: good basketball right here, from Fluvanna!

The post graduate team at FUMA is a one-year program. Students have graduated from high school and spend a year at FUMA in hopes of landing with a college program. The program has had graduates who have gone on to play in the NBA! My favorite was Shammond Williams. He matriculated to UNC before his professional career.

The PG program was under the legendary coach Fletcher Arritt. Coach Arritt led the program for 46 years sending 500 players to college, 200 to D-1, seven were NBA draft picks and 25 became coaches. Coach Arritt is on the ballot to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame this year.

The program is now under the direction of Matt Donohue. This year the team is 15-7. The next home game is January 27 at 4 pm. Then they play February 5 at 6:45 pm. Games are played in the Thomas Gymnasium on Arritt Court. You can view the schedule of games here.

Coach Arritt was known to stand on the court when he coached. So in honor of this, when the gymnasium was renovated, they included his footprints on the court! It is a touching tribute.

Cross off #56. Watching a Post Graduate game on Arritt Court when you take in a game!
